FairMoney

Head of Design | 2021 - 2024

This page can be just the highlights with what I did overall followed by different case studies:

  1. Loan application

  2. Redesingning the bank app

  3. Cards

  4. Savings

  5. Overdraft

  6. Crypto

  7. Transfers

  8. And more

Other cases can incl;ude learnings as a manager:

  1. hiring

  2. design maturity

  3. processes

  4. growth ladders

  5. and more

With over 10 million downloads and over a 5 million happy users, FairMoney is Nigeria's biggest digital lending institution and also a digital bank.

Coming in as the design leader I had my tasks cut out for me:

  1. Build a team

  2. Fix the current funnel leaks for the hero lending product

  3. Scale the loan-only app to a full service banking app

I worked wit the recruiters to setup a small team of 4 designers and 3 researchers in my first quarter

In parallel I started the following to get going on the product side:

  1. End to end analysis of the app

  2. Digging into funnels and understand the drop offs

  3. Competitive analysis to understand what other players in the market are doing

  4. Working with the team to organise market visits in Lagos, Nigeria and talking to our customers - this was really eye opening

  5. Planning OKRs and deliverables with the CPO and drafting an execution plan for the year ahead

In the process it became clear that I needed to focus on foundational design as well. The team lacked a proper style guide, let alone design system. It further lacked any processes to take things from 0 to 1 wrt design.

Once we

  • Led the hiring and formed a team of 5 designers and 3 researchers across Nigeria and India

  • Developed and directed the product design and research process throughout the organization

  • Crafted growth frameworks for career progression and implemented coaching systems to enable designers to excel

  • Collaborated with the broader team to establish product strategy and product-market fit

  • Set the fundamental design principles at FairMoney to advance the product and design, serving as tiebreakers and facilitating better user-centered negotiations.

  • Established design practices and tools crucial for the team's success, including visual design foundations, design systems, and more

  • Successfully led the revamp of the app's information architecture to allow support multiple financial product categories like savings, investments, insurance and more in the future
